What are the best countries to register a startup and then work remotely?

Hong Kong definitely remains at the top of the list. Like previously pointed out, you really do have to stay on top of the tax situation. The authorities in any country tend to get a little excited if they suspect that you’re hiding income to avoid paying your share of taxes.

You stated that you plan to work remotely, but keep in mind that if you ever decide to grow your business, you’ll have to decide if you plan to hire employees or work with other contractors (both of which create their own tax situations).

According to a recent article on Entrepreneur.com, the United States is ranked eighth in the world for starting a business. There is another important point made in the article as well – no matter what country you consider, you should make sure that it is comparable or better when it comes to the issues that you’re concerned about.

With that being said, I’d like to take a minute to talk to you about intellectual property. In whatever country you choose, you must make sure that you look at and understand their laws as it relates to intellectual property. Also, keep in mind that if you had a claim against someone for violating your rights, you would need an attorney in that country and you would likely have to travel to that country for court proceedings. Ask yourself it that’s really something that you want and can afford to take on.

The same can be said with any legal problem that you may encounter (be it tax related, business related, or even a criminal charge against you or your company). Additionally, consider what your definition of “functioning judiciary” is because in many countries, it’s a lot easier to bribe a judge or other official than it is in the United States. So, you could find yourself in a literal no-win situation.
