Can you file a patent in the US over the Internet without needing to visit USPTO?

It’s the patent office – of course they are on the cutting edge of new technology!

Not only does the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) encourage internet filing, they actually charge you for sending them mail. Ever since 2011, any regular non-provisional utility application filed by mail or hand-delivery has required payment of an additional $400 fee called the “non-electronic filing fee,” (which is reduced by 50% for applicants that qualify for small entity status). They don’t want to check their mailboxes any more than we do.

However, one of the downsides of this online filing system is that it can get very confusing, especially if it is your first time. If you haven’t actually reached the point of filing your patent yet, then you should consider hiring an attorney to assist you with this complex transaction. A simple mistake at any point during the patent process can ultimately cost you more money down the road, especially if you then need to hire an attorney to clean up the mess.
