Is 15 years worth waiting for a green card?

Because the Green Card process can take a considerable amount of time to complete, it’s easy to get muddled down in the time that you spend waiting. As far as the answer to your question, like others have indicated, the answer to whether or not it is “worth it” can only be determined by you. What are your long-term goals? Do you enjoy being in the US? Those are really the things that matter when determining if the entire process is worth your time.

I encourage you to focus on the benefits of having a Green Card as you wait for it to finalize.

Here are a few advantages:

  • You can travel freely to and from the US. This can be especially important if you still plan on visiting people from your home country. You don’t have to worry about risk of being denied at the port of entry.
  • You have the right to apply for government financial aid for education. If you plan on continuing your education this could be an incredibly attractive advantage.
  • You will be eligible for “in-state” tuition which is considerably less than what foreign students must pay.
  • You no longer need employee sponsorship and can work at any job in the US despite hours or job title.
  • You are eligible for government clearance which is only offered to Green Card holders and US citizens. This can greatly influence your opportunity for employment in the future.
  • You can sponsor a spouse or unmarried children under the age of 21.
  • You will gain immunity to changes in future immigration rules.
  • You can legally own property, fire arms or other property that other Americans posses.
  • You can live in any of the 50 states.
  • You can apply for citizenship.

I point out the last one because it may be something that interests you later on and that process doesn’t take quite as long.
