Do I need to start an LLC for my website/blog that makes advertising revenue?

It largely depends on if you’re treating your blog as a business and not a hobby. Importantly, the IRS has a rule that if a limited liability company (LLC) has not turned a profit in at least three of the prior five years, the IRS will categorize your business as a hobby. If the IRS classifies your blog as a hobby it would prevent you from claiming a loss related to the LLC.
