Answer by Raad Ahmed:

You’ve been given a lot of useful information about examples of privacy policies. One point I wanted to follow-up on is why you should really, REALLY avoid using a generator or template. It’s a tempting venture, no doubt, since so many offer free or crazy cheap solutions, but you definitely get what you pay for when it comes to these things.

Here are some things you need to watch out for:

  • Almost all generators or templates are very limited. They usually have limited phrasing and/or limit how many clauses you can include.
  • Most likely, the generators will not work for you. Your company is unique and your privacy policy should be geared specifically toward your situation. The chances of a generator actually producing the language and clauses you need are pretty slim.
  • Free usually isn’t really free. Most of these sites offer a very basic option before they ask you to upgrade for a higher fee. Consider what you really gain here. You will be paying for something that may or may not actually work for you.

Your best bet—hire a professional. This isn’t something you want to skimp on.
