My answer to Why don't lawyers operate on a fixed fee basis as opposed to the very expensive per hour basis?
Answer by Raad Ahmed:
You’re absolutely right!
Some per-hour firms like to tout that outlining every single interaction gives clients the peace of mind of knowing where all of their money is being spent. I’m not saying honest invoicing is the enemy, but like you mention—you’ll see every single charge and that is a big pill to swallow.
Consider this: Let’s say that you have a pending case that involves contracts. You receive a draft from your attorney and you don’t understand some of the terminology. You decide to shoot an email to your lawyer to ask about some of those terms. It takes you about 5 minutes to send the email and his response is a couple of lines long. A week later you get the bill and the invoice outlines that the quick email exchange cost you $50+!
Tell me that wouldn’t make your skin crawl.
And it’s more than just seeing the visual on your bill. It’s also never really knowing the final price until your case is over. There’s a lot that goes into legal services no doubt, but the process is already pretty overwhelming for clients so I’ll always feel like a fixed-fee offers the real peace of mind.
